Mat_5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

Proverbs 20:27 The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord, searching all the inward parts of the belly.

As we pray in tongues, our very spirit, cries out to God, in His language. Our deepest thoughts of heart, expressed perfectly to Him, in a language that our minds don’t understand, but that exactly speaks our deepest desires….

Romans 8:26 (EXB)

As we have been aggressively seeking God here in Tulsa, pressing into Him, praying in the Holy Spirit and seeking His face, I have noticed a wonderful dynamic happening.

In me, Holy Spirit is revealing insecurities and ‘stinking thinking’, and as I confess it to Him, He is changing, transforming me, to become more like Jesus, a better man.

Yet, as I have surveyed the spiritual landscape, I have seen folks ‘blowing up’ in anger, relationships severed or strained, and intense conflicts erupting. So, I asked God what is going on.

Initially, I thought it was all of the devil, a counterattack from the aggressive press we are in in prayer, to turn America and nations back to Jesus, and I am sure that there is some of that occurring, but the Lord showed me something deeper and more profound occurring.

Seems that He Himself, was gently knocking on peoples hearts, Christians that loved Him, but who, like me, had insecurities, secret sins, trauma, and deep core pain issues in their soulical realm.

As we have pressed in, our human spirits have been empowered by the Holy Spirit, and the first word of His name, is Holy!

Psa_23:3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

Makes holy

He has begun to gently love out some deep hurts and traumas in peoples lives, and as He has come knocking, first gently, now with greater and greater insist-ency and power, and folks have gone off.

The searing pain of His love, too savage to handle, people withdrawing or throwing up defenses of anger, in order to avoid His surgical knife applied to our hearts.
fire soul

He is not going to stop! Too many of us have prayed too great of a price, to allow old wineskins, and religious constructs, learned behaviors to hinder what must be done.

Luke 20:18

Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.

broken

It is time to fall upon the stone and become broken weeping puddles before Him, allowing the depths of His love, and fire to burn away our bitterness, betrayals, pain, pride, self-righteousness, perversions, lusts, rage, and ungodly control, letting Him truly be Lord of our lives, our families, and our church.

Psalm 139:23-24  (KJV)

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:

24 And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

One definition of wicked comes from the root noun,
wick1

[wik]
Spell Syllables
noun
1. a bundle or loose twist or braid of soft threads, or a woven strip ortube, as of cotton or asbestos, which in a candle, lamp, oil stove, cigarette lighter, or the like, serves to draw up the melted tallow orwax or the oil or other flammable liquid to be burned.
verb (used with object)
2. to draw off (liquid) by capillary action.
http://www.dictionary.com/browse/wicked

The sense then, of ‘wicked’ is ‘to be braided with evil’.

Through original sin, we are all fallen creatures, dead in our sins.

Yet, we have become new in Jesus, born-again, righteous children of the king!

Yet, this is in our spirit – our soul now has become the battlefield, where our mind, will and emotions would struggle to keep us living in our old nature. This part of us, must become renewed, transformed, by the Holy Spirit and the Word of God, as He carefully ‘unbraids’ our wicked motives and thought patterns and gives us new life.

This must be the cry of our hearts, to be Holy, and when He answers, we must allow Him to forgive, cleanse, and unravel the twisted cords our wicked ways have made our lives become.

Jacob, the deceiver, supplanter, con man, cried out to God, and after wrestling with an angel, became Israel, prince with God and man, the man of honor he was created to be.

This, is true revival. No more games with God, but deep brokenness, humility, and cleansing of heart, that brings His presence and glory into the earth, through us.

Let’s Pray:

‘Father, I hunger and thirst for what only You can give, not mere positional holiness through Jesus blood, but true purity of heart, motive, restoration of my soul, in the depths and core of my being. Break through every wall I have set up in my heart against You, truth, and cleanse me from my wicked ways, my deepest pains, my sickest secrets, that I might be the vessal of honor you have called me to be, fit for Your use Lord Jesus, Amen’

Zeph 3:9 For then will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the LORD, to serve him with one consent.

What an interesting passage! In the midst of Gods anger, declaring His judgments against rebellious people, we see Him declaring what it will look like after the people turn to Him, in spirit and in truth!

Isa 28:11 For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.

See it? He is foretelling of the baptism in the Holy Spirit.

Mark 16:17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

Ac 2:3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.

Ac 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

These are those: Joh 7:38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

This is the pure language or stammering lips referred to here in the Old Testament, that clearly pleases God.

God wants us filled with the Holy Spirit, speaking the ‘pure language’ He desires, ‘stammering lips’ that flow from a heart overflowing with the river of God!

If you have not yet experienced this mighty infilling of precious Holy Spirit, ask Him now for it is written:

Lu 11:13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

Let’s take a minute, and ask our Father, for the Holy Spirit, that Jesus clearly promises us:

‘Dear Heavenly Father, please fill me with the Holy Spirit, and let me flow in my heavenly prayer language, now, in Jesus name, Amen’

Now, that funny feeling inside of you, is the Holy Spirit, bubbling up. Open your mouth, and begin to speak the wonderful mysteries of God, where your heart of hearts, communes directly with your Heavenly Father, in the pure languages of heaven. Speak! Glory to God! Flow!

Praying in Tongues Makes Pure Hearts…

Mat_5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

Proverbs 20:27 The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord, searching all the inward parts of the belly.

Another Look at Speaking in Tongues

Gifts of the Holy Spirit – Tongues
Chris Karen Walsh's photo.

1 Corinthians 12:1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.
7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.
8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

I feel led to review a topic that may be old hat for some of us, but one can never exhaust the revelation in any portion of the Word of God. I am going to do a brief overview of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, explained to us by the apostle Paul in his first letter to the Corinthians, in the twelve chapter.

Now if you were Baptist, you would never have studied this particular portion of Scripture, nor the fourteenth chapter, for as far as they are concerned, these particular things have passed away. Yet, if you are a Berean Christian, who believes the Bible is the Word of God, you will study to see if these things be so, and you will quickly see that God and His Word, have never changed, and you will be filled with the Holy Spirit, with the evidence of speaking in other tongues, and become baptistcostal!

To do any of these gifts justice, I would have to devote a lifetime to each of them, for though the basic understanding of the gift is for everyone, like many things in God, the applications of each of these are limitless.

Of the gifts of the Spirit, there are three type of gifts:
The power gifts: healing, miracles, and special faith. These gifts Do something.
The revelatory gifts, word of knowledge, word of wisdom, and discerning of spirits. These gifts Reveal something.
The vocal gifts are what I feel led to discuss with you today, tongues, interpretation of tongues and prophecy. These particular gifts Say something.

Now 1 Corinthians 12:1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.

Some would say, well, that’s nice for you pastor, you pray all day and know lots about God and the Bible and stuff, but I’ll just stay over here in the middle of the road. Some of these spooky spiritual people are a little too weird for me thanks.

Well, God’s right over there in the middle of the road with you friend, because He said in
1 Corinthians 12:31 “But covet earnestly the best gifts: ” He wants you to have these gifts, He shed His blood to get them to you.

Well, lets look at them. Now in Bible school we take an eight-week course on this particular topic, three days per week. Today, I am only going to teach one portion of it, but our spiritual father, Kenneth E. Hagin, taught this subject for over 25 years straight, and never exhausted the revelation of these verses, because the Holy Spirit is Alive! I heard him say that after 25 years on this topic, he was still learning!

Know this: I believe you are all doers of God’s Word, and as you stir yourselves up in these areas, expecting God to manifest these things there is much more we can grow in here. This is an area of intimacy with the Holy Spirit that is inexhaustible.

Well, lets look at the gift of tongues. God said this gift would come to the church.

Isaiah 28:11 For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.

Isaiah 32:4 The heart also of the rash shall understand knowledge, and the tongue of the stammerers shall be ready to speak plainly.

Isaiah 33:19 Thou shalt not see a fierce people, a people of a deeper speech than thou canst perceive; of a stammering tongue, that thou canst not understand.

Now there are three kinds of tongues mentioned in the Bible. In no particular order lets start with the tongues mentioned here, and again in 1Cor 14. This type of speaking in tongues or supernatural utterance would be the one you might hear in a public meeting. You know, where you are in worship, and someone cries out in a supernatural utterance.

1 Corinthians 13:1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels,

1 Corinthians 14:22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.
1 Corinthians 14:23 If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?

1 Corinthians 14:5 I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.

1 Corinthians 14:13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.

So of the vocal gifts, the Bible teaches us that the greatest of these is prophesy.

Now we are speaking here about the public usage of tongues in the congregation. Paul, in bringing order to worship services acknowledges that tongues could and should manifest, but that the giver of the tongue should pray that they interpret what they uttered. Why? So that the church is edified or built up.

I was taught that if a valid tongue was given in a meeting it was because God had something on His heart that He wanted us to pay attention to. It was a sign to get quiet before Him in His presence. He was speaking, and we needed to listen.

I was also instructed back in those days, that if a tongue was given in a public service, that there would always be an interpretation given in that meeting. I don’t know how many times someone would give an utterance, and we would all get really quiet, and as I was growing in God, often I would hear God’s still small voice inside of me giving the interpretation. Often my pastor would speak the very words I heard God whisper to me. During these years, it gave me confidence to know I was actually hearing God, not simply my own thoughts. As I grew in God, I would whisper these words to myself, often hearing them echoed throughout the congregation.

As time went by, I hungered to hear what the interpretation was, and then little by little, I felt brave enough to speak out some of these things in public. Eventually, what I heard, I spoke, whether or not there was a tongue given to prime my pump so to speak, and so began a season of flowing in the prophetic, for tongues plus interpretation equals prophesy.

Well, that is one type of tongues. In my church, I used to teach the people, that if in worship or prayer you feel a supernatural language bubble up inside of you, speak it out. We all want to hear God. If they missed it, I wasn’t going to embarrass someone. If I felt they were off Scripturally, I would loving correct it from the pulpit, while encouraging, and congratulating the person for bravely stepping out in faith. Sometimes, people became so vocal, I had to ask them to be quiet, and write their words down, as it seemed they were always giving a word, that drew attention to them, instead to God. In a large church, it might be difficult to allow much public prophesy, but there can always be believers meetings (small group Bible studies) where church members can learn to practice flowing in the Holy Spirit.

The Second is like the early church received on the day of Pentecost. Where they spoke supernaturally in a known language, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Chris Karen Walsh's photo.

Acts 2:3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?

11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.

Now notice here that although they spoke supernaturally in a language unknown to them, the language they spoke was perfectly known to the people hearing.
Chris Karen Walsh's photo.

I had a wonderful experience of this.

When I was at Dayspring church, in Ottawa, Ontario, we started a bus ministry to reach the lost at any cost.

We picked up a black man one night at the Salvation Army, and brought him to church with us.

Well, to make a long story short, the time came when people came forward for prayer, and Tasso asked me to pray for him. I didn’t know what to pray for, so I began to pray in other tongues, seeking the Lord that I may interpret, so that I might have something meaningful to say to this man.

As I spoke what sounded like gibberish to me, Tasso perked up, and seemed very attentive to what I was saying. I figured that maybe the Holy Spirit was touching him somehow, so I kept on for quite awhile, perhaps ten or fifteen minutes. Finally, within myself I felt I was finished, so I asked this man if I he understood what God was doing for him.

He smiled at me like we had known each other for years, and said, “You speak my language!” I said what language do you speak? He said “Ethiopian, and that I had been speaking to him in an Ethiopian dialect from his village back home.”

Well, I explained to him that I did not speak Ethiopian, that what he heard was the gift of tongues in operation by the Holy Spirit. I asked him “What did I say?”

He said he had come to church that night very lonely and troubled. He was living at a street mission, and had recently arrived in Canada as a refugee from Ethiopia. He had left all of his friends and his wife back in Africa, and was presently dating another Ethiopian woman here in Canada. He had asked God if he should divorce his wife and marry this other woman, and then had been approached by us to come to church on our bus ministry. He came, and came forward for prayer. He said that when I prayed, I told him the story of Samson and Delilah from the Bible in great detail, and that as I spoke, he saw that it would be wrong for him to leave his wife for this other woman. He had been so lonely and scared he said; yet as I spoke he knew that God had made a way for him and his wife to be together again. He was going to leave this woman, and trust God with his future.

He hugged me with such love and tears; I’ll never forget it.

Now, to my knowledge, this is the only occasion I know of where I have been used in this manner. If God could use me, He can just as easily use you!

There are hundreds of known testimonies of missionaries being used in this manner to reach other people groups. There is a book we read in Bible school, that recorded many of these, most famous is the one in Topeka Kansas in 1901. I encourage you to get it, “Bright Wind of the Sprit.”

Well, the third type of tongues is the one described to us, when the apostle Paul exhorted all Christians.

1 Corinthians 14:5 I would that ye all spake with tongues,

1 Corinthians 14:18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:

This tongue is the regular supernatural prayer language of every spirit filled Christian. An evidence of the power of God come to your life.

This is the type of praying that one must cultivate as a daily discipline. One where you deliberately seek God, in obedience to the Scripture.

1Cor 14: 1 ¶ Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.
2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

I remember one day here when I was seeking God, singing praises to Him, and speaking to Him in other tongues. He said He liked hearing me speak in tongues, it was refreshing to Him. So I asked Him why? He said because he had heard all of the songs I sing before, but that when I spoke it tongues, it was new, fresh, and more intimate and personal to Him.

Some say, do I have to speak in tongues. Well, if you want to please God you do. Why,

Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Faith pleases God, and Mark 16: 17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

If you believe, you will speak in tongues. If there is anyone who does not yet speak in tongues, well, today is your day. You no longer have to tarry for the Holy Spirit, He’s already been sent into the earth, you don’t need to wait for Him, He’s waiting on you.

Now, if you are one of us tongue talking radicals, Shundai, Rundai, run around the room die. What are you doing with the gift God gave you? The Bible says to stir up the gift of God within you. God told Gloria Copeland, that if she prayed in tongues one hour a day, all would be well in her life. Well, she happily testifies thirty years later, that all is well with her. The ministry is well, her marriage is well, her children are well, and her grandchildren are well. Her finances are well, her health is well. God has been faithful to her obedience, and all is well. Practically, I wondered how on earth she managed to do it, faithfully, cheerfully, praying out mysteries, every day, day in, day out, month in, month out, year after year.

One day listening to her teach she told me. She has a walker at home, and she puts on either a good teaching tape or music, and she walks and talks to God every day. She gets her exercise in, and begins her day in prayer every day.

Well, look at the woman. She’s past sixty years old, and she looks great. If she can do it, so can we. Laying aside the sin and the weight that does so easily beset.

OK, let’s briefly look at the gift of prophecy. I alluded to interpretation of tongues earlier. For the record I’ll give a definition of the interpretation of tongues: It’s the supernatural showing forth by the Spirit the meaning of an utterance in other tongues.

I alluded to it in public meetings, but you can also pray that you interpret your own private prayer language. Often when I am here at the altar praying for people, I pray in tongues inwardly asking God, what does this person need Father? Often, He will cause me to know what it is, I just prayed out in other tongues.
keys to kingdom

I need to make one statement for some of you intercessors here. Often I take prayer journeys with God. I get unrestful in the Spirit, and need to know why. Rather than worry or fret, I have been known to jump in the van and drive for hours praying in tongues. One trip to Tulsa, I prayed the entire twenty-seven hours on the road in other tongues, and would have gone longer, had the release not come.

Well, I don’t want to keep you here all day, so I’ll whet your appetite so to speak, for the prophetic, but we will deal with it more fully, in another teaching.

For the record, prophecy is a supernatural utterance in a known language.

Rather than blow this off, we’ll get into it in more detail next lesson. Let’s pray:
Father, I pray that you grant us the gifts of speaking in other tongues. Father that you would give us the time, and help us discipline ourselves to spend time speaking in tongues in our own personal prayer language, that you would grant public utterances of other tongues in our midst, and that you would grant us interpretation of tongues, both personally and privately. Father, I desire to prophesy, to speak your Word supernaturally to encourage, and edify your people. We trust these things to come forth as you will, for we ask for them in Jesus name. Amen.

Would love to do this Bible study for you, but this is one you need to do for yourself. There are mysteries about your life, your individual giftings, callings, purpose that only Holy Spirit can reveal to you, personally. The way He does this, is through you, taking time alone, praying in other tongues. When you do, you will find, as I have, that indeed, Heb 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Seek Him today, pray in other tongues, get lost in the Holy Spirit. He is always worth the pursuit…

If you have not done this in a while, here are some Bible verses to meditate upon to build your faith: https://chrisaomministries.wordpress.com/2014/11/27/is-speaking-in-other-tongues-of-god/

Is tongues initial evidence of the Holy Spirit Baptism?

Tongues as initial evidence of Baptism in the Holy Spirit,

tonges

Though there are many promises that believers shall receive the Holy Spirit and speak with other tongues, there are only four accounts given, describing this New Testament experience.

These accounts are found in Acts 2, 8, 10, and 19.

tongues

In Acts 2:

And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.

And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Acts 10:

44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.

45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.

46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,
HS tongues

Acts 19:He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.

And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

So here we have three Biblical accounts (not merely Charismatic experiences, nor Pentecostal emotionalism) where believers received the Holy Spirit, and the evidence of this was at least speaking in their heavenly language, or as the Bible says, speaking in tongues.

These three passages alone are enough to establish doctrine, for Scripture interprets Scripture, and it is written:

This is the third time I am coming to you. In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.

We have recorded here three accounts, but what about the fourth?

Did believers there speak in other tongues?

I had always preached Acts 8, as the great unknown. That we did not know what the people saw after the apostles laid hands upon the believers there.

Let’s look at it:

Acts 8:17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.
18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money,
19 Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost.
20 But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.
21 Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter (3056) for thy heart is not right in the sight of God.

The joys of attending church!

I had always preached that speaking in tongues was the the initial evidence of the baptism in the Holy Spirit, based on the accounts of Acts 2, 10, and 19 documenting what happened when people received the Holy Spirit. In Acts 8 however, though I knew that Simon saw something when people received the Holy Spirit, I could not prove Scripturally, that what he saw was believers speaking in other tongues. That night, pastor Sharon was teaching on the baptism of the Holy Spirit, and rather than check out mentally after a busy day, I decided to stay engaged, and quietly pray for the service.

Sure glad I did!

Here in Acts 8 is the key to showing that what Simon saw, was indeed believers speaking in supernatural tongues, because of the definition of the word matter, strongs #3056.

Many of us admire the Berean Christians:
Act 17:10 ¶ And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.
11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

Here is an article I wrote some years back: https://chrisaomministries.wordpress.com/2014/11/27/is-speaking-in-other-tongues-of-god/

If you have studied Charismatic history, you will stumble upon the accounts of Topeka, Kansas, where many believe that the baptism in the Holy Spirit was rediscovered here in the United States:

Here is an excerpt from the account:

“In October 1900 in Topeka, Kansas, a small band of believers led by Charles Parham started Bethel Bible School. The school “invited all ministers and Christians who were willing to forsake all, sell what they had, give it away, and enter the school for study and prayer, where all of us together might trust God for food, fuel, rent and clothing.” No one paid tuition or board and they all wanted to be equipped to go to the ends of the earth to preach the gospel of the Kingdom as a witness to every nation. The only textbook was the Bible. Their concerted purpose was to learn the Bible not just in their heads but to have each thing in the Scriptures wrought out in their hearts.

As they searched the scriptures, they came up with one great problem – what about the second chapter of Acts? In December 1900, Parham sent his students at work to diligently search the scriptures for the Biblical evidence of the baptism in the Holy Spirit. They all came back with the same answer – when the baptism in the Holy Spirit came to the early disciples, the indisputable proof on each occasion was that they spoke with other tongues.

Armed with this head knowledge, they now sought to have it worked out in their own hearts. Parham called a watch night service on December 31, 1900. He assembled about 75 people including the 40 students. One of the students, Agnes N. Ozman asked that hands might be laid upon her to receive the Holy Spirit since she desired to go to foreign lands as a missionary. According to Parham, after midnight on January 1, 1901, he laid hands upon her and:

“I had scarcely repeated three dozen sentences when a glory fell upon her, a halo seemed to surround her head and face, and she began speaking in the Chinese language, and was unable to speak English for three days. When she tried to write in English to tell us of her experience she wrote the Chinese, copies of which we still have in newspapers printed at that time.”

They continued the prayer meeting for two more nights and three days. According to Parham, “We all got past any begging or pleading; we knew the blessing was ours.” The rest, as they say, is history.” http://www1.cbn.com/churchandministry/the-roots-of-azusa-pentecost-in-topeka

Out of the mouth of two or three witnesses, every word may be established, so I have confidently preached the baptism in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in other tongues, for several decades now, but this little nugget really blessed me.

Hope it blesses you too.

John 7:37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.

38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

https://chrisaomministries.files.wordpress.com/2014/11/hs-belly.jpg

The Holy Spirit has been given, and Jesus will still fill you with living waters from heaven if you simply ask!

If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

Let’s Ask!

‘Father, please fill me with the Holy Spirit, and give me my heavenly prayer language. I am thirsty! Jesus, I come to you to drink! Amen’

Is speaking in other tongues of God?

Is Speaking in tongues of God?

spirit

Many of you have already received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit with evidence of speaking in other tongues. For you, this is just a useful note set you can copy or email to your friends as an answer to a Biblical question. For some of you though, this is spirit and life, and although you have heard about people speaking in tongues, and perhaps been around it, it has not yet been your experience. Well, it can be, and this little teaching explains emphatically that this is a Biblical doctrine, not just the emotional experience of a few fringe elements. Let’s look at it.

Baptism in the Holy Spirit

  1. Why do we need to be filled with the Spirit?
  1. After you make Jesus the Lord of your life, it is the will of God that you experience the fullness of the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 5:18 says, “And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit.” It is the Holy Spirit’s ministry not only to impart the nature of God to the spirit of man at salvation, but to come and live in the new creature. His job is to reveal the exact knowledge of God from the heart of the Father. A believer cannot understand, by his own spirit alone, the profound wisdom of God. This is why Jesus said in John 14:26 that the Father would send us the Comforter to teach us “all things.”

When you receive the Holy Spirit, you receive the ability of God. Acts 1:8 says, “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you.” The word power in that verse is translated dunamis, which means ability and might. It is through the energizing force of the Holy Spirit living in us that we are transformed into effective witnesses. So, to be born again and not filled with the Spirit is like being a train without a track.

The ability you receive to pray with your spirit when you are baptized in the Holy Spirit is powerful. It edifies and builds up your spirit man and puts you in contact with the deep things of God (1 Corinthians 14:4, 2:10). For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

  • He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.

We see in Romans 8:26 ¶  Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

  • And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

It also allows you to pray God’s perfect will apart from your natural understanding and aids you in interceding for others (Romans 8:26-27).

HS perfect

And according to Jude 1:20-21,

20  But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,

21  Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.

Praying in the Spirit strengthens and intensifies your personal relationship with God, and helps us in our love walk.

  1. How can I receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit?

HS tongues

  1. The promise of receiving the Holy Spirit is for everyone in the Body of Christ because God gave His Spirit to the Church on the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2:32-33, 39). As a partaker of your covenant with God, however, you must individually receive what He has given you.

HS personal flame

I like this picture, reminds me of Rhinhart Bonnke preaching: “A Flame for every name! Your own personal flame!”

When you ask for the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, the Word of God promises that you shall receive.

Luke 11:9-13 says: And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone?…Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

HS promise

In the Bible, when believers received the Holy Spirit, they began to speak in a heavenly language. Acts 2:4 says, “And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” This is still true today. When you accept the Spirit’s indwelling, your spirit will immediately have a desire to express itself in praise to God. The Holy Spirit will give utterance through you as you give Him permission.

When you pray in tongues, you are praying in the Spirit. You are letting the Holy Spirit pray through your spirit. The Amplified Bible says in 1 Corinthians 14:14, “My spirit [by the Holy Spirit within me] prays….” Just as your native language is the voice of your mind, your prayer language is the voice of your spirit.

A Brief Bible study on the Baptism in the Holy Spirit

The promise:

Is 28:11  For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.

  • To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.

Acts 3:19  Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;

HS belly

Praying in other tongues will cause the weary to rest, and brings refreshing from the presence of the Lord. In today’s fast paced world, who doesn’t need rest and refreshing?

I heard Gloria Copeland testify that the Lord told her, thirty years ago, that if she would pray in tongues one hour/day that everything would be alright. Well, she has been faithful to do this, and everything in their life, health, finances and family are still alright.

Acts 1:8  But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

It is the promise of God, uttered through the lips of Jesus before He left the earth.

Acts 2:38  Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

  • For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

All who are afar off, means you, right there where you are reading this, for the Lord our God has called you. Now, if we are going to study a certain doctrine or area of theology, we need to look at what it looked like in the Bible. I have recorded here the experiences of other Christians who have received the infilling of the Holy Spirit, to see what happened, and how we can learn from their experience.

Instances where believers were filled with the Holy Spirit:

Acts 2:1 ¶  And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

2  And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

3  And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.

4  And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

5 ¶  And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.

6  Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.

7  And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?

8  And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?

Read v 4. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and who spoke? The Holy Spirit?

No, they spoke as the Holy Spirit gave them utterance. God will fill you with His Holy Spirit whenever you ask. He will not overpower you and force you to speak. You must, by faith, open your mouth and speak a heavenly language that you have never spoken before.

Act 8:14 ¶  Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:

15  Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:

16  (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)

17  Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.

18  And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money,

We see here a number of interesting things.

  1. The baptism in the Holy Spirit is an event that occurs after salvation. People had already been saved under Phillips ministry, but then God moved, sent the apostles to them, and then the believers received the Holy Ghost.
  2. One of the ways to receive the Holy Spirit is through the laying on of hands.
  3. Simon saw something after the Holy Spirit was given. Many preachers have added their interpretation of what they think Simon saw, but let’s stick with the Scripture. There was obviously some type of physical manifestation when believers received the Holy Spirit. I think they spoke in other tongues, but the Scripture does not say, so THIS IS STILL ONLY MY OPINION!

Acts 10:44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.

45  And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.

46  For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,

We see here a number of interesting things:

  1. God couldn’t wait for Peter to finish preaching before He baptized these folks in the Holy Spirit. Seems one can get saved and filled with the Holy Spirit all in one shot.
  2. These believers did not need hands laid upon them to receive the Holy Spirit, they simply believed the Word they heard.
  3. One of the initial evidences of receiving the Holy Spirit is to speak in tongues.

Acts 19:1 ¶  And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,

2  He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.

3  And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism.

4  Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.

5  When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

6  And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

We see again, a number of interesting things:

  1. Again, the Holy Spirit baptism is a different event than salvation. These people Paul preached to were already saved.
  2. Again these people received through the laying on of hands.
  3. They spoke with tongues as initial evidence of the infilling of the Holy Spirit.
  4. They also prophesied: they did not have to wait years before prophetic gifts from the Holy Spirit were given to them.

Overview:

These are the only four accounts recorded in the Scripture of believers being baptized in the Holy Spirit.

Two received through laying on of hands, two received directly. You can receive this gift directly from God, right now as a direct response to this Word that you have heard.

Scripture interprets Scripture and Jesus said: Matthew 18:16

But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.

Three of the four cases, and possibly the fourth, spoke in tongues as initial evidence of the baptism in the Holy Spirit.

You will speak in other tongues after you are filled.

I remember a couple of years ago, a friend of mine asked me to prove to him from the Scripture that the infilling of the Holy Spirit is Biblical. I shared with him, the verses I just gave you. He was still not convinced, and argued vehemently that these Pentecostal and Charismatic gifts had passed away with the 1st Century church. I asked him to show me that in the Scripture, and he showed me several vague references, but nothing concrete. Seems the denomination he came out of didn’t believe in the infilling of the Holy Spirit, and they were well grounded in their unbelief.

Well, I brought this man to a Pentacostal Church, and as God would have it, the pastor asked everyone to pray in tongues for five minutes before the service. This man was shocked at the heavenly roar, and obvious power in what happened, but still unconvinced. He invited me over for coffee and then argued vehemently that speaking in other tongues was of the devil, and that I was involved in some cult.

So, I said to him this: “Do you believe Jesus is God the Son, and that God raised Him from the dead?” Yes, of course he replied. “Have you accepted Jesus as your Saviour and Lord?” Of course! He replied heatedly. “Do you believe the Bible is the Word of God?” I pressed. Yes, he replied angrily. Ok then what do make of these two verses:

Hebrews 11:6  But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

“The fact that we are here debating the Word of God shows me that you are diligently seeking God, looking for His best for your life. Right?”

What are you getting at? He asked.

Read: Mark 16:17  And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

Jesus said these signs would follow those people that believe. I believe, therefore I speak in other tongues, you don’t believe so you don’t. Don’t let this bother you any more. God is not going to force His good gifts upon you, for tongues are only a sign for those that have faith, for one who believes. You refuse to believe, so you will not speak in tongues.

He was so angry that he asked me to leave! Well, I thought that was the end of it, and I went down the road rejoicing. Yet, I met him again several weeks later. Seems he went back to that Pentecostal church to argue more, but during worship, he got filled with the Holy Spirit, and began speaking in other tongues, and has continued to do so, every day since. To God be the glory!

If you desire the infilling of the Holy Spirit or if you are unsure whether you have received it, say the prayer below:

“Father, I am a new creature in Christ. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit to enable me to be a powerful witness of Jesus. I believe that I now receive the Holy Spirit just as the disciples did on the day of Pentecost. Amen”

Now open your mouth and speak!
