Let God pick your battles:

God fighting

As I read this morning’s Bible reading in One Year Bible, I began to think about broken people trying to leave broken lifestyles. Let’s read it together.
Ex 13:17 When Pharaoh finally let the people go, God did not lead them along the main road that runs through Philistine territory, even though that was the shortest route to the Promised Land. God said, “If the people are faced with a battle, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.”

18 So God led them in a roundabout way through the wilderness toward the Red Sea.[a] Thus the Israelites left Egypt like an army ready for battle.[b]

We all know the story, 10 plagues, Moses and Pharoah, “Let my people go!”

Imagine if you will the mindset of these people. Beaten, broken, enslaved for as long as anyone could remember, suddenly delivered by the hand of God, yet not yet fully trusting God fully yet.

broken people

Remember when God called David, and Samuel had a hard time accepting it:

1 Samuel 16:7 But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.

He knows what we are made of, and what it takes to build a strong foundation of faith into our hearts, that one day will allow us to be the warriors, delivers, and victors in life’s battles.

If any of you have seen the movie ‘Captain America’ there is a scene where the commanding officer says something like, ‘there is no way we can make a soldier out of him’, then in one of the drills, Cap falls upon a grenade to protect the other guys in his platoon, and the hardened soldier gets some instruction. He had looked at the small stature and fraility of the man, yet his courage in battle revealed his heart.

In this case, God knew the children of Israel were not ready for a battle yet with the Philistines, so He led them on a longer route.

Anyone read the Christian classic: ‘Hinds Feet on Hinds Places?”

Hinds Feet

It is the journey where a fictional character named ‘poor little much afraid’ is transformed through a journey with the Shepherd, to receive her hinds feet to be able to leap around the mountains with a new name: ‘Grace and glory” It’s a great read, but the point that comes to mind is the way that that Shepherd leads her on their journey, the horror of being led directly away from her destination into the desert, instead of up the mountain.

Seems the Shepherd was wiser than her though, because near the end of the book, she discovers the extra miles in the desert had strengthened her to climb the steep dangerous cliffs, and in exhilaration she discovered she had conquered her fears, and was able to leap the tall heights with ease and joy.

Over the years, I have worked with broken people, each struggling with some deep dark secret pattern of destructive behavior. Addicts especially come to mind, and how relevant this verse is in their lives. They cannot be around alcohol or drugs of any form for some time, until they become strong, the temptation is too great.

addict way out

In this Bible reading, the children of Israel were about to come in between a rock and a hard place, with far worse than the Philistines to face, the entire army of Egypt was about to back them up to the Red sea, and you know the rest of the story, God fought for them that day, as a whirlwind, a sea parter, and One who is altogether faithful.

Fear not

Maybe you are in a fight for your life today. Literally, or spiritually, it doesn’t matter.

1 Corinthians 10:13  (ASV)

13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as man can bear: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation make also the way of escape, that ye may be able to endure it.

Jesus is the way, and also the waymaker. He will provide, He will deliver, He will lead you away from battles you are not yet qualified to fight. He knows, He cares, He loves.

waymaker

Let’s Pray:

“Father, I need you to lead and guide me today. Show me Your will and Your way. Deliver me from the brutal circumstances that seek to destroy me, and show me the straight and narrow way Jesus promised is available to me. Amen”

Sometimes in life, you just gotta go for it! Been thinking about this particular season of transition in my life, as I have gone from being a moving and shaking businessman as a contractor, to becoming more and more obedient to the heavenly call in full time missions these past years, to now, carefully balancing construction as a part time superintendent, to staying aggressively in the face of God to maintain my place in the office and the call….

‘As the things of earth, grow strangely dim, in the light of His glory and grace’ the song goes..

The years of brutally hard work, and then before that the grueling schedule needed to survive my college degree, while maintaining national level fitness in the sport of triathlon, have come back to remind me, that the disciplines that must be in place, to be a champion.

Knowing my passion and drive, I have learned that I must come under the tight rein of the Holy Spirit, desperate for His presence, His voice, His leading, or the self imposed disciplines I would apply to myself, would bury me.

Yet, when we determine to settle for nothing other than the high calling of God in Christ Jesus, without compromise, and hunger for truth, and power with God, seems about every human relationship feels the test of the call.

In the natural, I have given it all. There is no financial seed left to give…in order to merely live each day, Jesus HAS to provide, there is no plan B.

And day by day, challenge by challenge, He has proved Himself faithful.

Has it been brutal? Yes!

Has it been rewarding?

To see the nations changed in prayer, the multitudes moved through my intercession, the experience the radical intimacy and fulfillment that only He can give, I must say, ‘YES!”.

Though I have nothing financially left, I get alone with Him, having stood upon His promises, and I look at the stars in the heavens…He made them!

He will reward this particular stand of faith, and He will not only restore everything I have given, and given up for Him, but will multiply it, and prosper me with not merely heavenly riches, but I will see wealth, and prosperity again, here, in the earth, in my life, supernaturally, by His hand.

To say I have been misunderstood, criticized, etc, would be an understatement, but I am consumed with One who totally satisfies, and I find myself loving people more and more, yes caring less and less whether they love back, or understand…

Certain things though, are only ‘as He wills..’

His timings, His gifts of the Holy Spirit, His appointments into public ministries, and His financial provisions and breakthroughs, we believe we receive them, and fight for them in faith, daily, yet, if the day ends, and it has not happened yet, then we roll the care of it over upon Him, and deliberately trust that He is faithful, that which He has spoken, that which we have believed we received, will surely come to pass.

In moments of weakness, I have heard Him say, ‘Are you still willing?’, and repeatedly, I have said, ‘Yes, Lord, strengthen, equip me to the responsibility before me, give me grace to survive the brutality of the savage unbelief, and contest of wills around me…;

I am not a Calvinist, believing in the great sovereignty of God, like we are some fluff in the wind of the cosmos.

No, I am a son of my heavenly Father, and a man of faith, passion, authority, passionately standing upon His promises, that He must fulfill, for He cannot lie.

What does faith look like though, when each day, as you believe, that which you have prayed for most definitely does not come to pass? When it feels like the heavens are brass, and that our faith confessions seem to hit some kind of metal dome over our heads, unheard by God?

In our anguish of soul, comes the comforter, the great One in the earth, the breath and voice of God, and He brings words of encouragement, that nothing on this earth can compare to…

Simple words, like ‘Child, I love you, and I hear your heart, your quietest whispers in the night, and I am with you, and am bringing to pass that which you have believed, for did I not promise and commission these things to you?’

Simple comforts like: ‘You have done my perfect will today!”

courage Jesus

These keep me going, like Joseph:

Ps 105:19  Until the time that his word came: the word of the LORD tried him.

There is a timing of a thing, and until that appointed time, I am aggressively reading, praying in tongues, after doing my faith confessions for the day, for I must keep my faith fed, strong, and I must fill my soul with good teaching, to grow, to press, to feed the raging hungers inside my heart!

Ps 17:3  Thou hast proved mine heart; thou hast visited me in the night; thou hast tried me, and shalt find nothing; I am purposed that my mouth shall not transgress.

I fight to keep my words right, for this is the way of perfection, holiness, and as I allow the Word to grow and work deeper and deeper in my heart, this becomes easier and easier, for as my deepest desires are changed, as He takes His knife to my fears, my filth, my stinking thinking, a practical purity emerges. I don’t have to rigidly watch my confessions as much, for out of my transformed heart, my mouth speaks, and good things come out…

courage2

Ps 18:30  As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him.

I trust in Him. He has spoken. I am sorely tried, but after it is all done, I shall be that vessal of honor described in the Word, purged, and fully fit for the Masters use…

Passionate love is worth the pursuit….

God is love….

Let’s pray:

‘Father, I know You, and I hear Your voice. May I not shrink back, or give up, but bring you great glory, in believing. Strengthen me to fully obey, without compromise or reservation, exactly what You have shown me. Comfort me daily, and equip me, for the responsibility of the call, in Your name I pray Lord Jesus.Amen’

The Chinese Bamboo – a parable of growth

Jesus is Lord of the Harvest – Our job is to grow!
chinese-bamboo

Chinese Bamboo Tree

I like the story of the Chinese bamboo tree: You take a little seed, plant it, water it, and fertilize it for a whole year, and nothing happens.

The second year you water it and fertilize it, and nothing happens.

The third year you water it and fertilize it, and nothing happens. How discouraging this becomes!

The fifth year you continue to water and fertilize the seed and then—take note. Sometime during the fifth year, the Chinese bamboo tree sprouts and grows NINETY FEET IN SIX WEEKS!

Life is much akin to the growing process of the Chinese bamboo tree.

It is often discouraging. We seemingly do things right, and nothing happens. But for those who do things right and are not discouraged and are persistent, things will happen. Finally we begin to receive the rewards.

I am now receiving the rewards of seeds that were planted 5 years ago. You are as well. Are you getting the results you want? If not, begin today to sow the seeds of what you want 5 years from now.

Remember, if you keep doing what you’ve always done, you’ll get the results you’ve always gotten.

By Dan Miller

I love this story – I find it encouraging as a leader, as I have worked for years to build businesses, churches, ministries, often pouring countless hours of hard work, sweat, money, prayer, teaching, and study into the entities  I felt ordained of God to pioneer and grow – and like the farmer in the story who watered and fertilized his seedling daily, saw little growth in the natural, often for years –

Yet, roots were digging down into the earth, building the deep foundation that had to be in place, to support the height and rich fruit that would last for generations.

So what are you building?
eternity-in-mind
What are the spirit-led steps of obedience you need to take, to develop in your gift and calling?

While I am back at school working on a Masters, I realize again, the principal of becoming a student for life at the feet of Jesus. I have not arrived – what I don’t know, I don’t know, and it seems here at seminary, I am revisiting certain truths at a deeper level, and Holy Spirit is answering questions I have had for over 20 years in some cases. Yet, I am a doer – and I study to apply, to help people, to solve problems, to build lives, organizations, curriculum that will equip and empower others in their unique callings and destinies.

So, as we enter into 2017 – what goals will you set before the Lord?

Let’s Pray:

‘Father – You have created me for a purpose, a high calling of heaven, fulfilled only in and through Christ Jesus. How well I know my own tendency to attempt to do this in my own strength. Show me how to obey you in it, to do it Your way, day by day, in intimate steps of obedience to Holy Spirit, seeking you first each morning, and walking with You through each day. Adjust the vision, the plan as You see fit, that I might fully obey You this year. I ask, knowing I am heard and answered, for I ask in Your name Lord Jesus. Amen’

What is your motive?

Purity of Heart!
Chris Karen Walsh's photo.
2 Chron 25: 2 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, but not with a perfect heart….

How well I have learned the difficulty that my motives cause. Years trying to get off the performance treadmill, doing good works trying to please my heavenly Father, who was already pleased with me. This verse stands out to me in this: I can be doing good works, but still be compromised in my obedience to Him. Doing works, without a perfect heart.

So, we continually pray, and obey:

Let’s pray:
Ps 139:23 Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:
24 And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting, in Your Mighty name I pray Lord Jesus! Amen’

The Law of the Bad Apple!

bad apple

John Maxwell – The Law of the Bad Apple:

As I read John’s Book, on the ’17 Indisputable Laws of Team Work’, he talks about how one bad attitude poisons the whole team. He gives a little checklist, of attitudes that we might hold, that are stemmed in selfishness and pride, that need to die. As I read them, I saw some of them in myself, so, I am going to share them with you, so that you can join me at the cross, and we can repent and think and act like Jesus.

1. Thinking the team wouldn’t be able to get along without you.
2. Secretly (or not so secretly) believing that recent team successes are really attributable to your personal efforts, not the work of the whole team.
3. Keeping score, when praises or perks are handed out to other team members.
4. Having a hard time admitting when you made a mistake? If you don’t believe you are making mistakes, you need to check this.
5. Bringing up past wrongs from your teammates.
6. Believe that you are being grossly undervalued or underpaid.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is bad-attitude1.jpg

These are John’s list, but I got to thinking about how deceptive these attitudes are, and how sneakily they can enter our thinking.

Read a couple of great quotes that got me to thinking:

Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: To choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s way.

Viktor Frankl, concentration camp survivor.

Read with me Philippians 2:

14 Do all things without murmurings and disputings:

15 That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;

Remember when reading Scripture, the context in which it was written: Paul wrote this from a Phillipian prison cell, under the cruel treatment of Rome. Yet, it was here he also wrote: ‘Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.’ Phil 4:4

Perhaps you are more humble than I am, and a great team player, but I need to grow in this area. I have always been a bit of a ‘lone ranger’, isolating myself, in academia, and sports became self focused, in that the sports I competed in (swimming and triathlon) were generally me against the clock. I would go off into my own particular rhythm or zone, and simply competed, to be the best I could be. Though I had other teammates, where we encouraged each other, for the sake of the team, we generally all thought this way, seeking personal excellence, because when it was time to race, we were totally alone with the clock, even if there were other competitors fiercely pushing us on either side.
Attitudes can be like worms eating into the sweet fruit our lives should be bearing…

Read this illustration, and thought it appropriate here: Both the hummingbird and the vulture fly over our nation’s deserts. All vultures see is rotting meat, because that is what they look for. They thrive on that diet. But hummingbirds ignore the smelly flesh of dead animals. Instead, they look for the colorful blossoms of desert plants. The vultures live on what was. They live on the past. They fill themselves with what is dead and gone. But hummingbirds live on what is. They seek new life. They fill themselves with freshness and life. Each bird finds what it is looking for. We all do.

A poll sheds light on a paradox of increased religiosity and decreased morality, according to sociologist Robert Bellah. His conclusion: 81 percent of the American people say an individual should arrive at his or her own religious belief independent of any church or synagogue.” Thus the key to the paradox is that those who claim to be Christians are arriving at faith on their own terms — terms that make no demands on behavior. A woman named Sheila, interviewed for Bellah’s Habits of the Heart, embodies this attitude: “I believe in God,” she said. “I can’t remember the last time I went to church. But my faith has carried me a long way. It’s ‘Sheila-ism.’ Just my own little voice.”

Charles Colson, Against the Night, p. 98

Let’s pray:

‘Father God, I see how I often am in the press towards the mark of the high calling in Christ Jesus, for my sake, instead of perhaps the best interests of your Body, Your Church, Your dream team. Forgive me for my selfishness, stinking thinking, and elitist, proud attitude. Help me to be the best I can be, in flowing with other leaders and team members, in Your name I pray Lord Jesus, Amen’

Know Thy Enemy!

Know thy Enemy

In this generation, we are called as Christians to exercise Jesus authority over satan and his demons influencing the minds of men: https://chrisaomministries.wordpress.com/2014/11/27/the-origin-and-nature-of-satan/

Know thy enemy:

know thy enemy

If we were born in another generation, and were a man, it would be normal for us to go to war. Well, as I showed in the Warrior side of Father God, God is a warrior, and if you are to be like Him, so are you. https://chrisaomministries.wordpress.com/2014/12/12/the-warrior-heart-of-god/

warrior

Remember, you are training for reigning, and God has not called you to be some buck private on the front lines, but are being groomed for officer status.

training for reigningNow a private simply obeys orders, and does what he is told. An officer however, gets involved in strategic planning, and does everything in his power to do the best for the men in his command. Some of the things he must consider in any combat situation are:

1) His supply lines: They say that for every soldier that actually fights on the front lines of battle, there are six people working behind the scenes to keep him in action. Food, medicine, transport, administration, medics, and those who work in the factories producing the ammunition he needs to fight. If you run out of food, you will not fight very long.

provision

2) Communication: There is power in agreement. If you can disrupt the enemy’s ability to communicate with each other, you can divide and conquer his goods.

(Mat 12:25 NIV) Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand.

(Mat 12:26 NIV) If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand?

divided kingdom

Just like we can disrupt Satan’s communication lines, so he seeks to destroy ours. Firstly, he seeks to get us so busy that our prayer time becomes simply religious one-way petitions to God, instead of beautiful communion, where we both speak and listen.

3) Fuel: I remember hearing of a battle when Nazi Germany attacked Russia. The wise Russians, simply fled, taking what they could carry, and destroying what might have helped provide for the advancing German army. The Germans ran out of gas in their tanks, and food for their men, and had to quit the assault.

Our food and fuel is the Word of God. (Mat 4:4 NIV) Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'” If we are to be strong in the Lord and the power of His might, we quickly recognize that our word level = our victory level. If we are daily feeding upon the word of God in our own personal lives, and keeping our prayer life up, Satan sees us, and finds someone else to attack that day.

bread

4) Ammunition – I asked a tank commander one time about combat missions, and priorities. He said that communication outposts are their first targets, then fuel and ammunition dumps. Your weapons of war are found in scripture in (Eph 6:10 NIV) Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.

(Eph 6:11 NIV) Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.

(Eph 6:12 NIV) For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

(Eph 6:13 NIV) Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

(Eph 6:14 NIV) Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place,

(Eph 6:15 NIV) and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.

(Eph 6:16 NIV) In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.

(Eph 6:17 NIV) Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

(Eph 6:18 NIV) And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.

(Eph 6:19 NIV) Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel,

Notice that in all these weapons, most are defensive while two are offensive. The sword of the spirit, (word of God) and the lance of intercession (prayer).

A gun doesn’t do you any good without any bullets. Next lesson I’m going to give you twenty-one weapons from the Word you can use to enforce Jesus victory in your life.

Today, you warriors, I want to teach you about battle strategy. Just as Satan has a personal plan to destroy you, God has a victory plan for you in every arena of life. Satan can not be everywhere at once, nor does he have the power to stop you when you obey God. God is Omnipresent, Omniscient, and Omnipotent. That means He is everywhere at once, He is all knowing, and He is all powerful. Greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world.

https://chrisaomministries.wordpress.com/2016/02/13/warrior-strength/

Now before you warriors step into the fray and blast satan out of the water with the almighty artillery God has entrusted me to give to you, you need to survey the battlefield.

As a child of God, you have quickly discovered this world is not the way Jesus intended it to be; the impersonalness of the world, the temptations we face in our flesh, the challenges we face as we are commanded to love people who would hurt us, and who do things contrary to what the Bible says they should, and then the constant onslaught of the enemy could leave us confused broken and bruised. If, that is, it were not for our Almighty God.

world

Jesus said the (John 10:10 NIV) The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

He wants us to experience that life he purchased for us, but certain things we need to get aggressive with in order to experience that life. We are more than conquerors in Him. (Rom 8:37 NIV)

Yet, a conqueror has to conquer something to receive the title. Which means there has to be a battle somewhere.

There was. Jesus, our victorious champion, came, defeated the devil at every turn, and died to pay the price for our sins, then rose victorious from death hell and the grave.

(John 12:31 NIV) Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out.

He was going to do it, and then he did it.

The Bible says that Jesus spoiled principalities and made a show of them openly.

Col 1:15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.

In fact, had the devil and his crowd known about what Jesus was really doing on the cross, he would have never have allowed him to die.

(1 Cor 2:6 NIV) We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.

(1 Cor 2:7 NIV) No, we speak of God’s secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began.

(1 Cor 2:8 NIV) None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

Authority2

Now, authority and the sword of the Lord have been handed to you, and you must conquer, and as Jesus did, fight your own fight of faith.

keys to kingdom

There are three battlegrounds each of us must fight upon: the world, the flesh and the devil.

Let’s take a quick look at these three fields of battle in the Word, and see how and understanding of these can help us get free, and stay free from every trap and snare of the enemy.

The World:

world overlook

(Mat 4:8 NIV) Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor.

(James 4:4 NIV) You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.

(1 John 2:15 NIV) Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

(1 John 2:16 NIV) For everything in the world–the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does–comes not from the Father but from the world.

(1 John 2:17 NIV) The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.

What does all this mean? Well this word world used here simply means “orderly arrangement”. I saw a T-shirt I liked that said ‘Rage against the Machine’. Although God is on the throne, He is not a cruel dictator. Rules without relationship equals rebellion. The sense of what John and James are describing to us is this: God wants a vital living relationship with us, his prime creation. Ever been involved in system that has become impersonal? A dead lifeless set of rules that crush the spirits of all those who are under them? This is the worldly system. In and of itself it is dead, lifeless. God wants us to live ordered lives, not religious ones. Although there is order in the kingdom of God, order is not God; Jesus is Lord. People, to prevent corruption and to help bring order to society created rules and laws in society. We are to submit to the laws of the lands to the degree that these laws agree with the Word of God. Godly government is designed to bring light and life and liberty to all that submit to it. Yet there is an ordered system that is directly opposed to Jesus Lordship. Territories that need to be possessed in prayer, and taken for the kingdom of God.

(Mat 4:8 NIV) Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor.

Notice there are kingdoms here that rightfully belong to God by right of creation and redemption, yet are being ruled by the devil and his demons. In a later course, I’ll teach those of you who continue with us how this works, but for now, all you need to know is that they exist, and that they are evil.

This worldly system is a dead thing, and only produces death. Yet, our Jesus brings life from the dead.

(John 6:33 NIV) For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

(John 6:51 NIV) I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”

How? As we pray for governments and situations, God makes a supply of his Spirit available, and begins to flow into these dead places with His River. Like water on dry ground, the soil softens, seed germinate, and the land begins to produce something. Prayer Produces Life! We die to our desire, and plan for a time, that families, cities, and nations might experience the life and grace of God.

(1 John 4:4 NIV) You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.

If you want further reading on “the world”, I recommend a little book by an author named Watchman Nee entitled, “Love not the World”.

So, we see, the world is an enemy of God, and of us.

The Flesh

flesh overcome

(Gal 5:19 NIV) The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery;

(Gal 5:20 NIV) idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions

(Gal 5:21 NIV) and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Now the NIV calls ‘the flesh’, the sinful nature here in this passage. I want to make a point here.

Ever heard someone say, “the devil made me do it?”

Let’s take a look here at the types of behaviours exhibited here and see.

Sexual immorality, notice here that God calls this a work of the flesh, not a demon. In order to end up in bed with someone outside of marriage, it doesn’t just happen. You need to make a decision to let your flesh rule you. The devil may put the thought in your mind, but you are the one that sins against God and goes for it.

The way we deal with flesh is different than demons. We don’t cast out flesh. No, individually we must crucify it. We must kill it. God won’t do it for us. Now, if you continue in any of these behaviors long enough, you attract demons. Like vultures they are drawn to the smell of rotting flesh and dead things. Yet, even if you have opened yourself to a demon in one of these areas, you need to repent, and go to the cross, and stop doing your sin. Remember the difference between Remorse and Repentance.

crucify the flesh

Well, let’s look at these.

Impurity and debauchery – pornography, masturbation, and homosexuality.

(Gal 5:20 NIV) Idolatry

Giving some other person or thing more affection than you give God. This can even be your family, your children, your job, and any thing that you allow to take more of your affection than you do God. Reality check. How do you spend your time? How much time do you give God in prayer and in the word, and in His agenda? Is He your Lord, or just your savior?

Witchcraft – This is not some freaky looking dude with a cape and wand necessarily. Sure, witches and warlocks exist, but this word has a deeper meaning that that. Whenever you manipulate, dominate or control another person to get your own way, its witchcraft. Even Christians, that pray prayers from their soul instead of their spirit, attempting to exert their will over another, instead of praying the will and Word of God for another, enter into witchcraft.

Hatred – A strong negative reaction, a feeling toward someone considered an enemy as well as loving someone less than another. I see this in families all the time. They survive together by the grace of God, but mom or dad has their favorites. Sibling rivalry. Despising one in your heart. God is not that way, and neither should we be. Even if we don’t like what someone is doing, we should love them, and treat them with as much respect and fairness as we can.

Discord – Strife. Arguing, bickering. That tit-for tat mentality. It’s flesh.

Jealousy – is used in three senses in Scripture; (1) as intolerance of rivalry or unfaithfulness; (2) as a disposition suspicious of rivalry or unfaithfulness; and (3) as hostility towards a rival or one believed to enjoy an advantage. Sense 3 approximates envy. God is jealous for His people Israel in sense 1, that is, God is intolerant of rival gods (Ex. 20:5; 34:14; Deut. 4:24; 5:9) One expression of God’s jealousy for Israel is God’s protection of His people from enemies. Thus God’s jealousy includes avenging Israel (Ezek. 36:6; 39:25; Nah. 1:2; Zech. 1:14; 8:2). Phineas is described as jealous with God’s jealousy (Num. 25:11,13, sometimes translated zealous for God). Elijah is similarly characterized as jealous (or zealous) for God (1 Kings 19:10,14). In the New Testament Paul speaks of his divine jealousy for the Christians at Corinth (2 Cor. 11:2).

Numbers 5:11-30 concerns the process by which a husband suspicious of his wife’s unfaithfulness might test her. Most often human jealousy involves hostility towards a rival. Joseph’s brothers were jealous (Gen. 37:11) and thus sold their brother into slavery (Acts 7:9). In Acts 17:5 a jealous group among the Jews incited the crowd against Paul. Jealousy, like envy, is common in vice lists (Rom. 13:13; 2 Cor. 12:20; Gal. 5:20-21). Jealousy is regarded as worse than wrath or anger (Prov. 27:4). James regarded jealousy (or bitter envy) as characteristic of earthy, demonic wisdom (3:14) and as the source of all disorder and wickedness (3:16).

envy

Fits of rage – These little childish temper tantrums are nothing more than this: flesh. When a grown man, uses the physical strength God gave him to break things or people, well, he has made a decision as to how he needs to be responded to. He who lives by the sword, dies by the sword. Its really simple, either you rule your temper, and submit it to the Lordship of Jesus (we call that self-control, a fruit of the spirit), or anger rules us, and Jesus is not Lord in that area of our life. It is a life or death issue, we must kill our rage, or it will kill us.

manhood temper

Selfish ambition – flesh. Whereas in (1 Tim 3:1 NIV) we read: Here is a trustworthy saying: If anyone sets his heart on being an overseer, he desires a noble task. So, we see that Godly ambition is a good thing. God wants you to be the best you can possible be for him. Yet, what if we build a house, a dream, get that degree, build a business, that was not the will of God for us? Wood, hay, and stubble: worthless in the day of judgment, of no eternal value. What a waste of our life, in light of what Jesus offers!

Dissensions, factions – bickering, cliques. God hates it, it’s flesh.

Envy – Who are you to get that thing! Why should they be blessed when I worked just as hard. No, rather. Glory! God blessed you? Let’s praise Him together, because I’m nest in line.

Drunkenness orgies – Self explanatory.

Again, notice that these are works of the flesh, and the cure for these is a crucified life, not a devil cast out. Most of the problems we face in this life come from this arena. Dealing with our own stuff, and the flesh of others.

The cure for flesh is spiritual growth and crucifixion. People need to feed on the word of God to grow out of this kind of behavior. (1 Cor 3:1 NIV) and kill fleshly desires that arise.

Brothers, I could not address you as spiritual but as worldly–mere infants in Christ.

(1 Cor 3:2 NIV) I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready.

(1 Cor 3:3 NIV) You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere men?

See here. These Christians were still acting like babies spiritually, so Paul could not teach them all that he had for them.

Until you master yourself, you are not ready to go into serious battle against demons.

And having in a readiness to revenge alldisobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.

Ro 8:13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

Col 3:5 Mortify (kill, deaden, deprive of pleasure) therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:

Bottom line, kill your flesh by feeding upon the Word and walking in the Sprit, or it will kill you.

The Devil

satan
We looked at where he came from and some of his tactics. Two good books on this area of Scripture are: Spiritual Warfare by Dean Sherman, and The Bondage Breaker by Dr. Neil Anderson. I

(2 Cor 10:3 NIV) For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does.

(2 Cor 10:4 NIV) The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.

(2 Cor 10:5 NIV) We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

(2 Cor 10:6 NIV) And we will be ready to punish every act of disobedience, once your obedience is complete.

When we go to war in the spirit, we begin and end with victory. Jesus won our victory 2000 years ago when he purchased victory for you and I. He has granted His authority to you, so that position-ally each of us have authority in each of these arena’s to enforce that blood-bought victory in our generation.

When Satan rears his ugly head in your life, you need to pick up the correct weapon, and blow him away. When the worldly system seeks to reproduce after its own kind, and a government seeks to implement legislation or has in place legislation that is not of God, we need to pick up the appropriate weapon of war, and change it. Authority does not rest solely in the hands of carnal man, but in the blood-bought church of the living God. When you are tempted to sin rather than fight, your own selfish fleshly way needs to remember that there was one beaten beyond human recognition for you. Blood was shed for you, and a holy God who loves you, but will never agree with sin. In the moment of trial, Remember

(1 Cor 10:13 NIV) No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.

way of escape

And when someone else is in the flesh, decide to stir up the love of God shed abroad in you heart by the Holy Ghost, and determine to forgive them, and bless them like Jesus taught us. Just because they are being an idiot, doesn’t mean you have to join them in it.

Next lesson, I’m going to give you some bullets for your gun, and teach you 21 weapons of spiritual warfare.

Let’s Pray:

“Father, thank you for helping me to understand, the battles I face in the world, my flesh, and with the devil. I choose to walk in faith, in the victory that overcomes the world. By your grace, I will crucify my flesh, and Satan, I command you to leave my life, in the name and authority of my Lord Jesus Christ! AMEN!”

Give in faith!

1 Corinthians 9:11 If we have sown [the seed of] spiritual good among you, [is it too] much if we reap from your material benefits?

1 Corinthians 9:14 [On the same principle] the Lord directed that those who publish the good news (the Gospel) should live (get their maintenance) by the Gospel.

Paul goes on to say, that he did not use his position as a minister of the gospel to take up offerings, rather he worked, making tents, to support himself. You might notice here, that Paul was not married, nor did he have children. Family responsibilities take time, and just as you bust a move on your job to provide for your family, I work every bit as hard, doing this, faithful to the Lord in prayer and the ministry of His Word, to you.

I will never charge for this: it my responsibility to God, my calling. Freely I have been given, now, I freely give…

As you give, hear Holy Spirit what to give, and honestly expect God to reward you for your giving.

Matt 10: 41 He who receives and welcomes and accepts a prophet because he is a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward, and he who receives and welcomes and accepts a righteous man because he is a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward. 42 And whoever gives to one of these little ones [in rank or influence] even a cup of cold water because he is My disciple, surely I declare to you, he shall not lose his reward.

I am a five-fold ministry gift and office – this is my life – I pray, I hear, I write, and wonderful things happen. You have your job description, I have mine – this is mine….

I have ‘see through’ faith for you, in this: Gal 3: 9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.

I believe I have a responsibility before God to be like Jesus, in every offering I receive. I receive it with thanksgiving, just like Jesus did the little boys lunch.

Then, because I walk and live by faith according to the blessing of Abraham, I believe that God will take your seed sown, and multiply it, according to what the blessing of Abraham promises:

Genesis 22:17 In blessing I will bless you and in multiplying I will multiply your descendants like the stars of the heavens and like the sand on the seashore. And your Seed (Heir) will possess the gate of His enemies

It has been a joy to me, to see the hand of the living God act in the lives of those of you who have supported us this year!

Before my friend Tom Leding died, he laid hands upon me at one of his meetings and prayed: ‘Father, may the anointing of financial increase that you have placed upon my life, be imparted to Chris, right now!’ As you know Tom has served on the board of Rhema for many years, and has walked in financial prosperity for many decades.

It’s working! I have heard wonderful testimonies of financial miracles, as we have prayed for people, everywhere we go!

Many have seen tremendous blessing come into your households, and for this we give thanks, and give Jesus all the glory!

Fire By Night – Cloud By Day!

Cloud by day, Fire by night!

Numbers 9: 16 So it was alway: the cloud covered it by day, and the appearance of fire by night.
17 And when the cloud was taken up from the tabernacle, then after that the children of Israel journeyed: and in the place where the cloud abode, there the children of Israel pitched their tents.
18 At the commandment of the LORD the children of Israel journeyed, and at the commandment of the LORD they pitched: as long as the cloud abode upon the tabernacle they rested in their tents.
19 And when the cloud tarried long upon the tabernacle many days, then the children of Israel kept the charge of the LORD, and journeyed not.
20 And so it was, when the cloud was a few days upon the tabernacle; according to the commandment of the LORD they abode in their tents, and according to the commandment of the LORD they journeyed.
21 And so it was, when the cloud abode from even unto the morning, and that the cloud was taken up in the morning, then they journeyed: whether it was by day or by night that the cloud was taken up, they journeyed.
22 Or whether it were two days, or a month, or a year, that the cloud tarried upon the tabernacle, remaining thereon, the children of Israel abode in their tents, and journeyed not: but when it was taken up, they journeyed.
23 At the commandment of the LORD they rested in the tents, and at the commandment of the LORD they journeyed: they kept the charge of the LORD, at the commandment of the LORD by the hand of Moses.

In this dispensation, God literally appeared to the people of God, the children of Israel, as a cloud by day, and a fire by night.

Now, while there are often spectacular demonstrations of the Holy Spirit and power, God leads us directly through His indwelling Holy Spirit, His Word, His witness, His still small voice, His peace, dreams, visions, and through the prophetic word preached under the anointing of the Holy Spirit.

Money simply makes more of YOU!

Money simply makes more of you

money-more-of-you

Pr 10:16 The earnings of the godly enhance their lives,
but evil people squander their money on sin

Some years ago, I was over at Rhema listening to Deon Sanders, the football legend speak.

He made the statement: Money simply makes more of You!

play-good

He went on to explain:

If you love Jesus, your money will go to help support His work, and to build great things for your family. If you love immoral women, money will buy more women. If you love partying, money will buy more expensive parties, more cocaine, fancy wines, superb whiskey. If you love cars, boats, computers, toys, etc, money just buys more of them, but if you love Jesus, you will use wealth with wisdom….

theresa money

I don’t know about you, but I am determined to make my life count for eternity!

I want each and every day to make an eternal difference in this sin sick, war torn, hurting world. I want to see people’s lives changed, by the love and power of God, and I’m hard after it.

Money simply helps me love more people, and do good in building cool projects.

theresa money plus love
Sure, the love of money is the root of all evil, but money itself is not evil, in fact, it can become an great tool to use in developing people. It makes a great servant, but a lousy Lord.

Seems the Lord has directed me to write and study often on the topic of Biblical wealth, the motives that govern our money. Here are a couple of thoughts:
When I had my carpentry company, and was determined to produce the highest quality of woodwork possible, money was a great way to keep people motivated. Not only did it provide for us as we carefully managed and produced some incredible projects, but it was a great way to reward men who took the time to hone their skill set and develop as master craftsmen over years.

People who would never take time to listen to you about Jesus, have a lot more interest, when you are the one writing their paycheck each week, and they actually see God’s love being walked out in the workplace, a boss who regularly walks, talks, and sacrificially loves the people we are called to serve, earns respect through the sweat, that can come no other way.

But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.

Seems God’s promotions simply mean more responsibility, and the privilege of serving and loving more people…

who do you serve

The truth is, there is a spiritual war being fought every day in the earth, and control of money is one of the weapons employed.
No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

I have a couple of questions for you today:

In this verse, that has been often misquoted, I believe Jesus is not speaking about money directly, but naming an actual evil spirit that controls people through money, named mammon. Light and darkness, you can’t serve God and money, but surely you can serve God WITH your money.

Not all of the thoughts that cross your mind with respect to your spending, are your own. Holy Spirit will gently nudge you to do good things, and evil spirits will encourage you to indulge your lusts, and spend your hard earned cash on worldly pleasures…

1. What do you do with your money? Have you taken a look at your bank statement, and honestly tried to look at your cash-flow with the eyes of Jesus? Could you cook at home a couple of days, or pack a lunch, so that you could give some of the money you presently spend eating out, on supporting an orphanage, a missionary, or some unique Jesus project perfectly tailored to your gift?

2. What are you doing to grow in your gift and calling? Do you have a night course you can take, some books you can read, or a mentor that you could carve time out with, that will help you grow intellectually, spiritually, physically? Are there ways that you can improve, so that you might earn more money, not only to improve the quality of your life (God does love you and want you to have nice things), but to deliberately to earn more income to do your part in alleviating human suffering somewhere in the world…

money world

 Let’s pray:

‘Father, please supply my needs today, and lead me and guide me in my spending, my giving, my stewardship of the resources and gifts you have given me, and give me creative ways to increase in all of these areas. May I ever be led by You Holy Spirit, not bled by the screaming needs and schemes of people, or the deceptive thoughts of devils. May I be generous, as You are Father, but careful to only give where You lead, not moved by the apparent need. I trust that You are good, and that You hear and answer me today, for I come to Your throne, in Your name Lord Jesus, Amen.
